We have digitized all the entries as published in al-Safar al-Mufid (Dr. Abdou’s Travels). You can now search this directory below by either selecting one of the drop-down criteria, or typing in the other fields. To preserve its value as a primary historical source, we have entered the data exactly as it appears in the book; this means there may be misspellings or seemingly mismatched transliterations between the names as they were rendered in Arabic and Latin alphabet. 

• Please note that if you enter values in two or more fields you might not retrieve any results. For example if you select "Female" for gender and "Haiti" for country, you will retrieve zero results because Abdou did not record any businesswomen working in Haiti.

• If a value is selected from a drop-down menu, and you no longer wish to use that value as part of that search, then you will need to click on the arrow and scroll all the way to the top of the selections and choose the blank criteria.

• Also, please note that the retrieved results stretch off-screen to the right, AND possibly towards the bottom of the page (depending on how many results were retrieved). So, you will need to scroll right as well as down to see all the information.

• Finally, while the database contains close to 7,400 records, not every record will have data for each criteria. For example, only 30 percent of the records have an entry for "Origin Country."
